How to choose the right season for the Great Migration
The Great Migration is a year-round movement of wildebeest, zebra and other wildlife across the Serengeti ecosystem. Rather than planning around one guaranteed event, choose a season by deciding which landscapes and moments matter most to you.
Start with the kind of experience you want
Some travellers hope to see large herds moving across open plains; others are most interested in predator activity, quieter camps or dramatic river scenery. Those priorities can point to different areas and months, so begin with the experience rather than a single date on a calendar.
Wildlife follows rainfall and grazing conditions, not a fixed timetable. Even within the same season, herds can be spread over a wide area. A well-placed camp and a flexible guide can matter as much as the month you travel.
Choose the region and camp with care
The migration moves through Tanzania’s Serengeti and into Kenya’s Maasai Mara ecosystem. The best base depends on where the herds are expected, the length of your trip and whether you want to combine more than one park.
Ask your travel planner how the camp’s location affects daily game drives and transfers. A property described as “near the Mara” can still be a long drive from the areas you hope to explore.
Keep your itinerary flexible
River crossings are unpredictable and should never be promised as part of a safari. Plan a journey that remains worthwhile if the herds move elsewhere: include time for other wildlife, landscapes and unhurried drives.
